Radiation oncologist
Avid reader, traveler and adventurer
Dr. Osama Mohamad is a radiation oncologist who cares for patients with cancers of the genital and urinary organs. He specializes in treating prostate and kidney cancer using a variety of precise radiation therapy techniques, including intensity-modulated radiotherapy (in which radiation beams are manipulated to conform to the tumor's shape), stereotactic body radiotherapy (which uses imaging and manipulated beams to deliver high doses of radiation in fewer than five treatment sessions), and high-dose-rate brachytherapy (in which radioactive seeds are placed inside or very close to the tumor for a short period and then removed).
Mohamad's research focuses on developing tools to personalize treatments for patients with prostate cancer, as well as evaluating these tools in clinical trials for patients with prostate cancer.
At Emory University, Mohamad participated in the Medical Scientist Training Program of the National Institute of Health, earning both his medical degree and a doctorate in neuroscience and stem cell research. After completing a research fellowship in particle radiotherapy and prostate cancer at the National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology in Japan, he completed a residency in radiation oncology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, serving as chief resident.
